THE YOUNG Saints U17 team kicked off their Ross-shire Youth League summer campaign with a home game against Alness United in front of a good sized crowd at the Links on Friday night. Although the visitors won on the night, the game was hailed as a success on and off the field, with the team in particular receiving praise from many quarters for how they approached their debut.
Alness United took a 15th minute lead with an impressive goal before doubling their advantage to take the score to 0-2 at half time. An unlucky deflection increased United's lead midway through the second period before Gordie Bryce notched the Saints' first U17 goal of the new season with a good finish to reduce the deficit. Alness added a fourth which was to be the final goal of the game shortly before time.
Throughout the match, the St Duthus debutants looked composed and far from overawed by the occasion, and showed frequent signs of promise in all areas of the pitch.
